Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Friday that Turkey was determined to do whatever was possible to prevent the escalation of tension in Lebanon.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the Chairman of the Group of Eminent Persons of the Council of Europe Joschka Fischer at Istanbul's Conrad Hotel on Friday, Davutoglu said that the situation in Lebanon was critical.
Unfortunately, if the critical situation in Lebanon spreads into the whole region, we could witness instability that would bother us all, Davutoglu said.
In response to a question on Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri's meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Friday, Davutoglu said that, as in the past, Turkey made serious efforts for the stability and tranquility of Lebanon.
Prime Minister Erdogan, Hariri and I held a meeting in Ankara on Friday following the resignation of 11 ministers from the Lebanese cabinet. Premier Erdogan will hold talks with the leaders of regional countries later on Friday. We will go over the steps that may be taken to overcome the political crisis in Lebanon. We will work so as to prevent the escalation of tension within Lebanon. Turkey will make efforts so that the crisis in Lebanon does not get deeper, Davutoglu also said.
