Justice and Development (AK) Party Deputy Chairman Omer Celik said on Saturday that participants in a congress of the Iraq Kurdistan Democratic Party (IKDP) stressed the country's unity, to which he said Turkey had also been exerting efforts.

Attending the congress of the IKDP in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, Celik said the event was important in the sense that it highlighted relations between the regional administration and the government in Baghdad.

"We have seen that relations between Irbil and Baghdad are very positive, which is vital for both the stability of Iraq and the future of the region. Both Irbil and Baghdad are strengthening each other's positions. We have heard promising statements from different sides of the political spectrum here underlining Iraq's unity, democracy, reforms," Celik told the Anadolu Agency.

Celik said he held a brief meeting with IKDP Chairman Massoud Barzani, adding that he would meet the Iraqi Kurdish leader again to launch projects to develop relations between the AK Party and the IKDP.

Celik also cited Barzani as praising Turkish government's policies to improve relations with Iraq and the regional administration.
