Turkey's top diplomat on Thursday met with Iran's assistant nuclear negotiator ahead of an Istanbul gathering of Iran with Western powers over Tehran's nuclear program.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Iranian Deputy National Security Adviser Ali Bageri discussed in Istanbul preparations for the meeting, which Iran has described as "the last chance" to find a settlement through a fuel-swap deal, warning that Tehran would otherwise begin enriching its uranium from 3.5% to nearly 20%.

The Turkish foreign minister is scheduled to meet also EU's top foreign policy representative, Catherine Ashton, in Istanbul.
