Turkey's FM says now time for Lebanese groups to make decision

Turkey's foreign minister said that his country was ready to help if there was a new approach from the parties in Lebanon.

Ahmet Davutoglu said at a joint news conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Ankara, "stability in Lebanon is of vital importance for the Middle East region. As a neighboring and friendly country, Turkey has always tried to do its utmost to prevent serious impacts of a Lebanese crisis on the region. Turkey also extended support to the solution offered by Saudi Arabia and Syria to resolve the crisis. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced Turkey's support to Saudi Arabia-Syria initiative during his visit to Lebanon."

"After Syria-Saudi Arabia initiative did not yield any results, Turkey took action to ease the escalating tension in Lebanon last week. Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir Al Thani of Qatar and I held a series of talks in Lebanon for two days. We handed over a draft document to the parties in an effort to ease the tension in the country. We believe that the draft took into consideration Lebanese parties' all concerns. Talks continued till 2:00 a.m. this morning. Then I returned home to meet Mr. Lavrov," he said.

"Political parties can have differences of opinion and disputes. Such differences of opinion can also emerge among regional countries. But no one should forget the fact that Lebanese people suffered much in the last 3-4 decades. We hope that common-sense will be prevalent in Lebanon this time. We hope that Lebanon will overcome the crisis on the basis of rule of law, democratic rules and constitutional processes. It is Lebanon's domestic affairs. We did not try to impose anything on Lebanon while we exerted efforts to resolve the crisis. But all countries are responsible for taking necessary measures to prevent the crisis from turning into a regional crisis," he said.

Asked whether Turkey and Qatar suspended their efforts to find a solution to the crisis in Lebanon, Davutoglu said, "Turkey tries to do everything in its power to contribute to stability of friendly countries. We did everything we could. Now, it is time for Lebanese groups to make their decision. Turkey is ready to help if there is a new approach from the parties in Lebanon."
