Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday called Germany's Christian Wulff to congratulate him on his election as country's new president.

In a statement, Gul's office said that the two presidents reaffirmed their will to exert efforts to cement historical and deep-rooted relations between two allies, Turkey and Germany.

Christian Wulff, deputy leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel's party, was elected German president on June 30 after a three-round voting.
