President Abdullah Gul is expected to attend the Developing 8 (D-8) summit on Thursday in Nigeria, a gathering that will be attended by leaders of mostly Muslim countries, including Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Diplomatic sources told Cihan News Agency that President Gul will attend the summit, where the leaders will discuss the latest round of economic sanctions against Iran due to its suspected nuclear ambitions, an Israeli raid on an aid flotilla and ways to recover from the global economic recession. The same sources also said that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will not accompany the president.

Turkey reportedly will also seek to bring up the deadly Israeli raid on an aid flotilla that claimed the lives of eight Turkish and one American citizen. Turkey on Sunday vowed to sever ties with Israel unless Israel apologizes. The government, however, denied this on Tuesday, saying that the foreign minister's remarks were misrepresented.

The Abuja Declaration is expected to be released at the end of the summit.

The D-8 is an economic cooperation consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey that aims to improve its member states' position in the global economy, increase diversity and create new opportunities in trade relations. The D-8 was officially established in İstanbul in 1997.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin bin Mohd. Yassin and Pakistani Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim will also attend the meeting.
