Turkish FM: more recognitions of Palestine to ensure peace

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Thursday Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory are illegal and added that settlements do not pave the way for peace.

At a joint press encounter with his Syrian counterpart Walid Moallem in Ankara, Davutoglu reaffirmed Turkey's position that construction of Israeli settlements should come to a halt and that peace talks should continue in line with permanent borders of the Palestinian state.

"Because settlers are illegitimate. So, such an illegitimate process cannot clear the way for peace," Davutoglu said.

"However, continuation of peace process is of vital importance. However, we are deeply disappointed over the failure of recent U.S. efforts in that direction," he said.

Davutoglu also called on the international community to recognize Palestine and said peace cannot be achieved without recognition of the Palestinian state.

Peace talks, the first direct negotiations between the two sides in nearly two years, collapsed over Israeli refusal to freeze settlement construction when a previous 10-month freeze expired on September 26, shortly after the launch of new talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
