Turkish FM says Tunisia to become stronger

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu expressed hope that Tunisia would be stronger after overcoming the current situation.

We are experiencing historical days for our region, said Davutoglu, who is visiting Tunisia as the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe, on Monday.

Holding a press conference at Turkish Embassy in Tunis, Davutoglu said that on the one hand they were holding meetings in Tunisia, and on the other hand they were closely following the developments in Libya.

Hundreds of people have been killed in Libya since protests broke out across the North African nation a week ago. In the capital, Tripoli, and cities of Benghazi, Bayda and Tobruk, people took to the streets to demonstrate against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year reign.

All the incidents first began in Tunisia, said Davutoglu, adding that Turkey and COE were ready to extend every type of support in this process.

Mentioning the strong ties between Turkey and Tunisia, Davutoglu said that Turkey would do its best to help Tunisia.

Regarding Libya, Davutoglu said that the priority was the safety of Turkish citizens in Libya, adding that nearly 550 Turks were evacuated from Tripoli.

We are trying to evacuate a total of 25,000 Turks in the safest way, he added.
