Turkish, Greek diplomats make first unrestricted border passage

The first diplomatic passage took place with a ceremony at the Pazarkule border crossing in north-western province of Edirne and Kastanies border crossing in Greece on Thursday after a period of 28 years of restrictions on owners of diplomatic and service passports.

Turkish Vice-Consul in Komotini Ozkan Duman crossed into the Pazarkule border crossing after passport formalities at the Kastanies border pass.

Duman met with Greek Consul General in Edirne Paraskevi Ceveleki at Pazarkule border crossing.

Today, the first of 21 agreements signed between Turkey and Greece during Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Athens on May 15-16 has entered into force, Duman said.

Turkey and Greece ended restrictions on owners of diplomatic passports who wanted to cross into each other's territories through Pazarkule border crossing in Edirne and Kastanies border crossing in Greece. The new implementation will contribute to Turkish-Greek relations. This is an historic day for Turkish and Greek diplomats, Duman said.

Paraskevi Ceveleki said that it was one of her dreams to end the restrictions on owners of diplomatic and service passports.

Ceveleki, in Turkish, said that she was very happy and thanked the Turkish people.
