Turkish meeting calls on Muslims, Christians to protect Jerusalem

Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin said Monday the "Istanbul Declaration" has been accepted with unanimity at the Second Expanded Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Conference-member states (PUOICM).

Speaking to reporters following the meeting of the PUOICM, Sahin said that the main agenda of the Istanbul meeting was Israel's efforts to the change the holy status of Jerusalem and preparation of a declaration (by the PUOICM) against such change.

The "Istanbul Declaration" has been accepted with unanimity. The Istanbul meeting was attended on behalf of the parliaments of 30 OIC member states, Sahin said.

Touching on the "Istanbul Declaration", Sahin said that the only way to establish fair, permanent and comprehensive peace in the Middle East was through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that stood on its own feet and had Jerusalem as its capital.

There could not be peace in the Middle East without peace in Jerusalem. And, there could not be peace in the world without peace in the Middle East, Sahin said.

The whole world must accept this reality. The Istanbul Declaration made a serious call to Palestinian groups to give up division among themselves, Sahin said.

I believe that this unity and message will reach the stated goal, Sahin also said.
