Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel inspected troops along the border with Syria on Tuesday amidst escalating tensions with the neighboring country.

Özel arrived in the İskenderun district of Hatay province late on Monday and inspected troops at the 39th Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The military chief then inspected deployments in the border districts of Yayladağı and Altınözü from the air.

Gen. Özel is also expected to visit the town of Akçakale in the province of Şanlıurfa, where a Syrian mortar shell killed five civilians last week.

His visit comes as the exchange of artillery and mortar shelling across the volatile Turkish-Syrian border entered its sixth consecutive day since the Oct. 3 incident in which Syrian mortar shells hit the Turkish border town of Akçakale in Şanlıurfa province, leaving five people dead and 13 injured.

Meanwhile news reports said on Tuesday that additional fighter jets have been sent to reinforce an air base in the country's Southeast amid escalating tensions with Syria.

The Doğan news agency quoted unidentified military sources as saying that at least 25 additional F-16 fighter jets were deployed at Turkey's Diyarbakır air base late Monday.
