Turkish minister: Germany's visa regime halts trade efforts

Turkish State Minister for Foreign Trade Zafer Caglayan on Sunday inaugurated alongside German Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle International Sweets and Biscuits Fair in Cologne, Germany.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Caglayan said Turkey and Germany should work harder to achieve a trade volume of over 50 billion U.S. dollars.

Caglayan said Germany's visa regime for Turkish nationals hampered efforts to boost the trade volume between the two countries.

"Some of our businesspeople often face so many difficulties that they are about to quit participating in trade fairs in the European Union. Our products freely move in the EU but there are severe limitations on free movement of our nationals. We need to remove the visa barrier, which we consider as an element of unfair competition," Caglayan said.

Caglayan said certain non-EU countries such as Montenegro and Macedonia were granted the right to free movement, adding, "visa policy on Turkey is a violation of human rights and a trade barrier."
