Turkish official: APA members urged to suspend Israeli ties

Mehmet Sahin of Justice & Development (AK) Party said on Monday that Sub-Commission of Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) reached a consensus of opinion to put pressure on the assembly member countries to suspend relations with Israel.

Sahin, a member of APA, released a written statement and said the sub-commission convened in June 11 and 12 in Indonesian capital Jakarta and "global crisis" was the main topic of the meeting.

Sahin said Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Turkey attended the sub-commission meeting. "Turkey proposed inclusion of a special additional agenda item pertaining to Israel's attack on ships carrying aid to Gaza and its condemnation. The proposal was accepted unanimously," he said.

"As a result of tough talks, it was clearly stated in the decision that the attack was a state terrorism against all humanity, a crime against humanity committed in international waters and should certainly be punished," Sahin said.

Sahin said, "the participating countries reached a consensus of opinion to put pressure on APA member countries to suspend relations with Israel aiming to protest this country's inhumane stance. The biggest punishment on Israel is economic sanctions. This decision was taken unanimously and we hope APA member countries like China, Russia, India, Korea and Central Asian countries will take this into consideration."

Israeli navy forces raided a convoy of aid ships of Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, killing nine activists and injuring 30 others.

The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) was born in 2006 at the Seventh Session of the Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace (AAPP).

In other words, the APA is continuation of an organization which was established in 1999. The APA comprises, in 2007, of 41 Member Parliaments and 17 observers. Each Member Parliament has a specific number of seats in the Assembly based on the size of their population. The number of total seats, and therefore, number of votes, is currently 206.

Members of Assembly must be elected by members of the Member Parliaments. The APA Charter and Tehran Declaration lay out a framework of cooperation among Asian countries, and point out to a vision; that is Asian Integration.
