Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend EU-LAC Summit in Madrid on May 18 as the guest of Premier Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of EU president Spain.

Turkish Prime Ministry stated on Thursday that Erdogan's participation in the Summit of EU, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) prior to his visits to Brazil, Argentina and Chile would show the close interest of Turkey in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Erdogan will also hold bilateral meetings, and he will be presented honorary doctorate by European University of Madrid.

LAC region --which has nearly 550 million population and 1.3 trillion USD of gross national product-- has been gaining more importance in the aspect of world politics and economy in recent years.

Turkey, within the scope of opening policy to Latin America and the Caribbean, attaches importance to complete legal infrastructure with regional countries, increase high-level political contacts, develop diplomatic and commercial representation network, advance economic and commercial relations and establish institutional relations with regional organizations.
