Speaking to reporters prior to his departure from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said, "Turkey attaches great importance to Central Asia due to its historical and cultural ties with this region".

Pointing to Kazakhstan's important role in its region, Gul said, "Kazakhstan is a rising power in Central Asia and its significance is being followed by the world closely".

Gul said Turkey and Kazakhstan had perfect relations, adding the two countries would sign numerous agreements and take joint decisions as part of his visit in an effort to carry their relations to a level further.

Gul also noted that the trade volume between Turkey and Kazakhstan reached 3 billion USD in 2008, adding the value of the projects carried out by Turkish contractors in this country amounted to nearly 11 billion USD.

"The relations between the two countries are too intense and multi-lateral", Gul said.

Commenting on the talks he would hold as part of his visit, the Turkish president said that he would meet with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev in Cimkent on Sunday and they would later proceed to the city of Turkestan on Monday.

Noting that he would hold a series of formal talks in Astana, Gul said he would get together with Turkish businessmen, deliver a speech at the Turkish-Kazakh Business Forum and attend the inauguration of the Turkish embassy building as well as a cultural center and a Turkish academy during his stay in Kazakhstan.

President Gul will be accompanied by Turkish Minister of Housing & Public Works Mustafa Demir and a group of deputies, bureaucrats, academicians, businessmen and journalists during his visit.
