Turkish President Abdullah Gul has said the situation in Syria could not be expected to last, adding that change was inevitable.
"Sooner or later a transition will take place. Our hope is that it will happen without any more bloodshed and further destruction of the country. And I think the international community must assume a very active position," Gul told reporters on Monday in Ankara, the Turkish capital.
Gul said "worst scenarios unfolded" in Syria, adding that Turkey had taken all necessary steps and would continue to do so in the face of threats from the Syria crisis.
The president was referring to the trade of artillery fire between Turkey and Syria for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday after an errant Syrian round landed last Wednesday on the Akcakale town near the Turkish-Syrian border killing five civilians, all women and children.
