Turkish President to visit to Slovenia in July

Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin on Monday met with his Slovenian counterpart Pavel Gantar in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Speaking in a meeting of Turkish and Slovenian parliamentary delegations, Sahin said Turkey welcomed Slovenia's active position in the efforts exerted for the peaceful settlement of problems in the Balkans.

Sahin said high-profile visits between the two countries helped relations improve significantly over the last year, adding that Turkish President Abdullah Gul was set to pay an official visit to Slovenia in July to return his Slovenian counterpart Danilo Turk's visit to Turkey last year.

Sahin said Slovenia had always supported Turkey in its European Union membership bid, adding that two of Ankara's EU negotiations chapters were opened under Slovenia's EU rotating presidency.

"We are grateful for all the contributions Slovenia has made for our EU membership process," Sahin said.

Gantar said on his part that Turkey and Slovenia had good economic relations despite a drop in the trade volume due the global economic crisis.

Gantar said Slovenia would continue to exert efforts for a liberal regime of EU visa policy for EU candidate countries.
