U.S. Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder said that executing the article 5 of NATO could be considered in case of an attack on Turkey by Syria or any other countries.

Daalder told reporters on Tuesday that if an attack happened on Turkey, NATO members convened to decide whether it would be necessary to execute the article 5.

Noting that Turkey was informing NATO member countries about what was happening along its Syria border, Daalder said that Turkey had not demanded a military assistance due to the situation in Syria so far.

However, certainly the territorial integrity, political independence and sovereignty of all NATO member states were of vital importance, said Daalder, adding that it was the main mission of NATO to be in solidarity to defend lands of member states.

And if any attack is staged on Turkey or any other member countries, all NATO member states, including the U.S., will be ready to respond, he said.

Daalder said that the article 5 had been executed only once in 63-year history of NATO after September 11 attacks in the U.S.

NATO's article 5 says if a NATO ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the ally attacked.
