Bill Gates recaptured the title of world's richest person from Mexican investor Carlos Slim with a net worth of US$76 billion, Forbes magazine says.

Bill Gates, who has led the title of world's richest person for 15 of the past 20 years, recaptured the title from Mexican investor Carlos Slim, with a net worth of US$76 billion according to Forbes magazine's annual billionaire list on Monday.

According to the magazine, the richest people on the planet got even richer in 2013.

The record 1,645 billionaires own US$6.4 trillion between them but just over ten percent were female. 492 billionaires are from the U.S. 488 from the EU, and 444 are from Asia.

Bill Gates, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Microsoft board but agreed to become more involved again in its daily management as the top tech adviser, saw his wealth soar to US$76 billion in 2013, according to Forbes.

Gates' fortune has also benefited from a rally in stock holdings that include the Canadian National Railway Company and sanitizing products maker, Ecolab Inc., which rose 34 percent and 45 percent respectively.

Less than a quarter of Gates’s fortune is held in Microsoft. He has donated US$28 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation a charity that primarily deals with extreme poverty and poor health in developing countries.

The second wealthiest man in the world, Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, now is worth US$72 billion.

The third wealthiest man in the world, Amancio Ortega, is Spain´s richest man. He owns 59 percent of Indetex, the world´s largest clothing retailer, now worth $64 billion.

Christy Walton, worth US$36.7 billion, the world's richest woman is the widow of John T. Walton, the second son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton. After John's death in 2005, Christy inherited her husband's fortune, which consists of a 9.8 percent stake in Wal-Mart, the largest private employer in the U.S., and a 29 percent stake in First Solar, a manufacturer of solar panels.

The fortunes of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google Inc. ranked 17th with US$32.3 billion and 19th with US$31.8 billion respectively.´s Jeff Bezos is worth US$32 billion and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ranked 21st, more than doubled his net worth to US$28.5 billion. The chief executive officer of the world’s largest social-networking company sold more than US$2 billion in stock recently and donated another US$1 billion to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Eike Batista, Brazil’s richest man, lost most of his fortune in 2013. His net worth declined by more than US$10.3 billion during the year. OGX Petroleo & Gas Participacoes SA, the oil company that transformed him into Brazil’s richest man, filed for bankruptcy in October. Batista was the world’s eighth-richest person in March 2012, and now has a US$300 million net worth, according to the Forbes.
