Butchers' Federation: Turkey needs importing small cattle

Chairman of Turkey's Federation of Butchers, Fazli Yalcindag, said Friday there were problems in Turkey regarding small cattle.

Speaking to the AA, Yalcindag said that the number of small cattle in Turkey had dropped significantly.

Turkey must import small cattle as their number has gone down in Turkey, Yalcindag said.

Small cattle constitutes an important sector in Turkey. Yet we have great difficulties in this sector in Turkey. The number of small cattle has gone down dramatically in Turkey, Yalcindag said.

Turkey is an appropriate country for small cattle. We must increase the breeding of small cattle in Turkey. We have to re-develop the small cattle industry in Turkey, Yalcindag said.

There are sheep that give birth to two or three lambs. We must possess such sheep rather than those that give birth to only one lamb in Turkey, Yaldindag said.

The price of red meat is on the rise. We expect the price of red meat to go down once more small cattle gets imported, Yalcindag also said.

Turkey's state-owned Meat & Fish Corporation, known as EBK, has recently held auctions to import 4,000 tonnes of livestock in a bid to reduce high meat prices in domestic market.
