Etihad Airways are in final talks that would see it take up to a 49 percent stake in debt-ridden Italian carrier Alitalia, the companies announced on Sunday.
The Italian carrier flies about 25 million passengers a year, if the deal goes through Etihad will have a stake in one of Europe's biggest travel markets.

Italian carrier Alitalia has more than €1bn debts and had to be bailed out by Italian government last month.

The two companies have set a deadline of 30 days to complete a deal.

"Any issues that may prevent the establishment of an appropriate business plan will have to be resolved to ensure the plan can be implemented to move Alitalia to sustainable profitability," the airlines said.

Etihad Airways is the flag carrier airline of the United Arab Emirates; it has stakes in Virgin Australia, Air Berlin-Germany and Aer Lingus-Ireland.
