Germans top Turkey's Istanbul tourist list in Q1

Some 1.15 million tourists have visited Istanbul, Turkey's most populated city, in the first quarter of 2010, according to statistics given by the provincial tourism agency.

The number of visitors was 1.24 million in the same period of last year.

Statistics regarding the nationalities of visitors showed that German tourists took the first place and Russians were the second. Iranians, Britons and Italians followed them.

Istanbul welcomed 7.5 million tourists during the whole year in 2009. However, Istanbul, as the 2010 European Capital of Culture, aims to attract 10 million visitors this year.

Turkey expects a good tourism season in 2010, hoping to host 30 million tourists.

Despite the recent global economic downturn, Turkey has been the only country to see increasing tourist numbers among top ten tourist destinations in 2009. Nearly 27 million tourists visited Turkey last year, a 2.5 percent rise over 2008, although global tourism contracted 4 percent and European tourism plunged 6 percent.
