Iran to boost gas exports to Turkey

World Bulletin/News Desk

Iran plans to increase its gas exports to Turkey by bolstering its gas pressure facilities in Tabriz, Tehran’s official news agency IRNA reported Saturday.

Abdul Hossein Samari, the deputy head of the National Iranian Gas Company, said that the nominal daily capacity of gas transfer -- which sits at 36 million cubic meters -- would rise to 53 million cubic meters after the new facilities are installed in the following days.

The development will bring the maximum capacity to 60 million cubic meters, Samari added.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived in Ankara in June for his first official visit to Turkey since becoming president a year ago. He was accompanied by a number of Iranian cabinet ministers, high-ranking officials and more than 100 businessmen.

An energy-hungry Turkey imports 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Iran every year at a price of $507 per cubic meter. However, Ankara complains about high prices and lack of energy supply security as Tehran sporadically halts gas flow.
