Jobless claim down in May, Turkey's Iskur says

The jobless claim was down 774 month-on-month in May 2010, the Turkish Employment Agency (Iskur) said on Friday.

According to figures of the Unemployment Insurance Fund Bulletin, 31,404 people filed for unemployment benefit in May 2010.

This figure was 32,178 in April 2010.

The number of people who filed for unemployment benefit was 39,112 in March 2010.

190,383 people were paid 64.9 million TL (40.5 million USD) of unemployment benefit from the fund in May 2010.

Over 1.9 million people have applied to get unemployment benefit from March 2002 when the implementation began till May 31, 2010. 1.9 million of them got unemployment benefits worth 3.3 billion TL (2 billion USD).

The Unemployment Insurance Fund totals 43.5 billion TL (27.1 billion USD).

Employment "reviving"

Meanwhile, a Turkish state minister said that employment was "reviving" and unemployment was "dropping" in Turkey.

Turkey's State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said employment had speeded up whereas unemployment had dropped in Turkey when compared with developments in other countries.

"Turkey has been among the countries where unemployment rate dropped in the quickest way among International Labor Organization (ILO) member states," Babacan said during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Council in Ankara.

Babacan said the global economic crisis affected the unemployment figures in Turkey, and raised it to 14 percent in 2009 over 2008.

"The number of people who benefitted from unemployment insurance was up to 471,600 in 2009 from 221,600 in 2007," he said.

Babacan also said total employment was up 1.5 million people in Turkey year-on-year in February 2010.
