The head of the Hava-Sen workers union for aviation and airport staff in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Burak Atakan, has confirmed that a new airline will be flying to the island’s Ercan aiport.

Karpaz Airlines (KHY), named after the Karpaz (Karpasia) peninsular of the island, will begin flying to the TRNC from Turkey as of April, he said.

Although the airline will be a privatized firm, controls of its flights to and from Turkey will be given to the state.

Adding that the firm is already in possession of the necessary licenses and permissions, he said that the final touches were being made before the airline could become fully operational.

The TRNC is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world, but since Turkey is the only country to officially recognize its existence, flights to the TRNC can only be made from Turkey.

Other airlines flying to Ercan aiport include Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, OnurAir, Atlasjet and SunExpress.
