Northern Cyprus Airlines to be founded

The foundation agreement of "Northern Cyprus Airlines" in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will be signed on Tuesday.

The new airlines company will be established after Turkish Cypriot Airlines (KTHY) declared bankruptcy in September, 2010.

TRNC state, TRNC private sector and Turkish Airlines (THY) will meet tomorrow for the signing ceremony.

"Northern Cyprus Airlines" will be founded with a consortium of state-private sector and a company from Turkey.

TRNC's Public Works and Transportation Minister Ersan Saner said that tomorrow would be a historical day for the country, adding that for the first time, TRNC state would become partner with private companies.

Saner said that the new company would fly to 11 destinations with three planes as a beginning, adding that the flights would begin in the end of March.

KTHY was established in December, 1974. The first scheduled flight was operated on February 3, 1975. In 2005, the Turkish government sold its shareholding in KTHY to Ada Airlines. To avoid bankruptcy, the management had decided to sell the company in June, 2010. After the end of the bidding period, the Turkish carrier Atlasjet was the only bidder. On June 21, 2010, the airline announced via their website that they had ceased all operations until further notice and eight days later, on June 29, 2010 it was announced that the airline had gone out of business.
