Obama to make statement on jobs on Friday

President Barack Obama will make a statement on Friday at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) about April jobs data that will be released earlier that day, the White House said on Thursday.

Obama will be joined by his top economic advisers, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Christina Romer, head of the Council of Economic Advisers.

The U.S. jobless rate was holding steady at 9.7 percent for the third straight when unemployment figures were last released a month ago.

The number of U.S. workers filing new applications for unemployment insurance fell slightly less than expected last week, government data showed on Thursday, implying a measured job market recovery.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 444,000 in the week ended May 1, the Labor Department said.
