Over 1 mln Zimbabweans face deportation in S.Africa

More than one million Zimbabwe nationals who have immigrated to South Africa illegally have a December 31 deadline to register themselves with South African authorities or face deportation in early 2011.

According to South African authorities, only 124,314 Zimbabweans have applied for visa by December 19, and many Zimbabweans complain on the slow process of receiving their visas and fear of not being able to make it home for Christmas.

The deadline will not be extended, said Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

“The Zimbabweans must also be fair on us and realize that we are working and doing our best to sort out their issue and if they miss going home this Christmas it's a small sacrifice," he added.

Riots motivated by xenophobia back in 2008 targeted mainly Zimbabweans who not only lost their livelihood but in some cases loss of lives were reported. High crime rate is also reported among approximately 1.5 million illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe residing in the country.
