Spain PM says may will extend state of alert

Spain's government will extend the state of emergency imposed to end a strike by air traffic controllers if the situation requires it, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Monday.

"Depending on how the circumstances evolve, the government will take the appropriate decision on extending the measure...taking into account of course the views of all political parties," Zapatero told a press conference.

Zapatero's Socialist government declared a 15-day state of emergency on Saturday, allowing the army to take over air control towers and threatening striking workers with jail.

The unofficial action over changes to working hours began on Friday and brought air traffic to a standstill, stranding hundreds of thousands of holidaying Spaniards.
