Turkey's southern free trade zone in the Mediterranean port city of Mersin posted a trade volume of $2.2 billion for 2010.

"The trade volume at the Mersin Free Trade Zone has seen a 16 percent increase over 2009, when the figure was $1.9 billion," Edvar Mum, head of zone's operator, told the Anadolu Agency.

Mum said the free trade area housed a total of 403 companies with 32 of them were foreign, adding that the trade volume has reached $34.4 billion since the zone was established 22 years ago.

"We are working on plans to expand the zone further geographically, which would create at least 2 thousand more jobs and an extra trade volume of $600 million," Mum said.
