Turkey aims to privatize Ankara's natural gas grid in 2010, a bureaucrat at the Privatization Administration said on Thursday.

Ahmet Aksu, the deputy chairman of Turkey's Privatization Administration, said that the administration aimed to privatize Baskent Natural Gas by block sale this year.

"We can open a tender very soon," Aksu said during a energy privatization meeting in Ankara.

With 1.2 million subscribers, Baskent Natural Gas is the second biggest natural gas distribution company in Turkey.

The efforts to privatize the company were launched on July 2, 2009.

A monopoly in Ankara, the company has a natural gas distribution licence valid till 2037 and the distribution tariffs have been indexed on the USD till 2017.

On privatization of electricity transmission companies, Aksu said tender process of eight of 20 companies had been completed and 5.1 billion USD of income had been obtained from privatization of electricity transmission companies in 11 regions.

Aksu said the administration was planning to open tenders for the rest of the companies in 2010.

There were 18 thermal, 27 hydroelectrical and 56 electricity power plants within the scope of privatization, Aksu also said.

Turkey earned some 2.3 billion USD from privatization projects in 2009.
