Flights from the Turkish city of Istanbul to the Athens, Greece and Dublin, Ireland were cancelled on Wednesday.

Turkish Airlines (THY) and Olympic Airlines cancelled their flights from Istanbul to Athens and from Athens to Istanbul as public and private sector employees have gone on a strike in Greece to protest government's move to curb budget expenditures.

Greek air space was closed to domestic and international flights as the General Confederation of Greek Workers decided to go on a 24-hour strike.

On Tuesday, Greek Civil Servants Confederation (ADEDY) went on a two-day strike.

Also, flights from Istanbul to Dublin were cancelled due to an ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland.
