Turkey exceeds year-end export target

Turkey's exports totaled 112.7 billion USD two days before the end of 2010 and exceeded government's year-end target of 111.7 billion USD, Turkey's foreign trade minister said on Thursday.

Zafer Caglayan told the meeting of Economic Coordination Council that monthly exports reached 10.5 on December 29 and that it would go over 11 billion USD for the whole month, a size larger than monthly exports seen in last 27 months.

"We are 1 billion USD above year-end target as of December 27 evening. If conditions were better, we could have surpassed 120 billion USD this year," Caglayan said.

Turkish exports totaled 102.1 billion USD last year.

Caglayan recalled government's target for 2011 which was set as 127.5 billion USD in the medium-term program and said, "we had an agreement with our exporters and decided to hit at least 132 billion USD reached in 2008, unless we face extraordinary conditions."

Turkey's major target is to reach 500 billion USD by 2023, the 100th anniversary of the country.
