Turkey, Finland to debate nuclear cooperation

Turkey's energy minister said on Wednesday that planned nuclear power plant would be constructed by attaching importance to security and by using latest technology.

"No risk is in question," Energy & Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said speaking after a meeting with Japanese Ambassador in Ankara Nobuaki Tanaka and Japanese Foreign Ministry official Matio Niogawa.

Yildiz said nuclear power plant which Japan wanted to construct in Turkey and several issues regarding energy were assessed at the meeting.

Yildiz said, "Turkey is eager to sign a framework agreement with Japan regarding use of nuclear energy for peaceful reasons. There is not a big breaking point between us. I

hope the parties would agree on a draft."

Japanese official Niogawa said it was a free market agreement that would enable cooperation between Turkey and Japan in the future.

Commenting on his scheduled visit to Finland, Yildiz said, "I received an invitation from Finland to discuss cooperation issues such as the renewable energy and construction of nuclear power plants."
