Turkey has chance to continue low interest rates: economist

Turkey had the chance to continue low interest rates for the first time, an economist said on Friday.

Cevdet Akcay, chief economist at Turkey's Yapi Kredi Bank, told a panel discussion titled "2011 Macroeconomic Expectations" in Istanbul that Turkey weathered global economic crisis successfully.

"If capital inflow to Turkey continues in 2011, economic growth will continue in 2012," Akcay said.

"Turkey secured interest rate normalization in one and a half years thanks to global economic crisis. Normally it could take 5 or 6 years," he said.

After economic crisis, Turkish economy advanced remarkably among world economies and Turkey acquired a great reputation in the world, he said.

Murat Ucer, advisor at Global Source Partners, said that growth with high current deficit was the most serious risk for the country.

Structural reforms and a sound monetary policy were of great importance for the country, he added.
