Turkey says ranked 5th in Europe over military spending

Turkey's Defense Industry Undersecretary Murad Bayar has said that they were currently pursuing 250 projects worth of 26 billion USD.

24 percent of these projects is domestic development, 57 percent is joint production, ten percent is direct procurement and nine percent is consortium, added Bayar who spoke at "Defense Industry Technology Share Seminar" in Ankara on Thursday.

Bayar said that Defense Industry Undersecretariat (SSM) undertook the modernization of Turkish Armed Forces and development of defense industry.

He noted that three billion USD was spent for defense industry in 2010.

Bayar said that SSM aimed to increase productivity as well as the rate of meeting the needs with domestic means and also develop by-industry.

Noting that land platform needs of TSK were completely met by domestic industry, Bayar said that all land vehicles were produced in domestic industry. He added that all of the surface platforms were also met by domestic industry.

Bayar said that they envisaged to meet design and production of air vehicles by domestic industry too, however, it necessitated very difficult technologies.

Noting that the first step of production of national warplane was taken yesterday, Bayar said that it was a 10-15 years of target, adding that only 5-6 countries in the world were doing this.

Meanwhile, deputy chairman Tanil Kucuk of the executive board of the Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) said that Turkey was the 4th in Middle East and 5th in Europe which spent highest money for military area.

Kucuk said that the production of defense industry, which was 2.8 billion USD in 2009, reached three billion USD in 2010. He added that TOBB was ready to support domestic defense industry.
