Turkey shrank 4.7 percent in 2009 over 2008, the statistical board announced on Wednesday.

Turkey's statistical board, TurkStat, released its growth figures in 2009 and the last quarter of 2009.

Accordingly, Turkey shrank 4.7 percent year-on-year in 2009, however it grew 6 percent in the last quarter of 2009 over the same period of 2008.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 953.9 billion Turkish liras (TL) (635.9 billion USD) in current prices in 2009.

The board announced the GDP as 251.8 billion TL (503.6 billion USD) in current prices in the last quarter of 2009, with 8 percent rise over 2008.

Also, the GDP increased 6 percent in the last quarter to 25.6 billion TL (17 billion USD) in constant prices.

The board said the GDP was up 0.4 percent year-on-year in 2009 and reached 953.9 TL in current prices, but was down 4.7 percent to 97.8 billion TL (65.2 billion USD) in constant prices.

The national income per capita was 13,269 TL, or 8,590 USD, in current prices.

The medium-term program projected that Turkey would shrink 6 percent in 2009.

GDP growth in 2008 was 1.1 percent.

Turkey's economy grew in the last quarter of 2009 after four quarters of shrinkage, the statistical board said on Wednesday.

The national income per capita was 8,590 USD in Turkey in 2009. The projections were 8,456 USD. It was 10,436 USD in 2008.

Accordingly, Turkish economy started to shrink in the last quarter of 2008 due to the global economic crisis although it grew for 27 quarters uninterruptedly.

Turkey's economy had shrunk 14.5 percent, 7.7 percent, and 2.9 percent in the first, second and third quarters of 2009 respectively. However, it grew 6 percent in the fourth quarter.

After the 9.5 percent of shrinkage in 2001, Turkey grew 7.9 percent, 5.9 percent, 9.9 percent, 7.6 percent, 6 percent and 4.7 percent in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Despite the 7 percent shrinkage in the last quarter of 2008, Turkey closed the year 2008 with 0.7 percent growth.

The GDP was down to 617.6 billion USD (953.9 billion TL) in current prices in 2009. This figure was 742.9 (950.5 billion TL) in 2008.

In 2009, Turkey's economy shrank only 4.7 percent, which was below 6 percent year-end projections in the medium-term program.

The highest shrinkage with constant prices was in construction industry with 16.3 percent.

The mining industry shrank 6.7 percent; manufacturing industry shrank 7.2 percent; whereas the decrease in electricity, gas, water generation and distribution was 3.5 percent, in wholesale and retail trade was 10.4 percent. The transportation, warehousing and communication industries shrank 7.1 percent.

The highest growth in 2009 was in fishery with 10.8 percent.

The growth in agriculture was 3.3 percent, 3.9 percent in hotels and restaurants, 8.5 percent in broker services, 4.1 percent in house owning, 4.5 percent in real estate, renting and business, 2 percent in education, and 3.2 percent in health and social services.

In the last quarter of 2009, all industries grew except the construction sector and social and personal services. The construction industry was down 6.6 percent and the social and personal services shrank 0.4 percent in this quarter.

The highest growth was in the third quarter was again in fishery with 13.1 percent.

The growth in agriculture was 1.5 percent, 3.5 percent in mining, 12.8 percent in manufacturing industry, 1.5 percent in electricity, gas, water generation and distribution, 10.3 percent in wholesale and retail trade, 5.5 percent in hotels and restaurants, 3.6 percent in transportation, warehousing and communication, 8.1 percent in broker services, 10 percent in real estate, renting and business.
