Turkey to privatize thermal power plants 'soon'

Turkey's privatization authority plans to start privatization of thermal power plants with a total capacity of 16,000 MW in the shortest time possible, head of privatization authority said on Sunday.

Ahmet Aksu said the first phase of privatization process covers four thermal power plants owned by EUAS, state electricity generation company.

Four thermal power plants were earlier reported to be privatized apart from portfolio groups. They are; Hamitabat (1.120 MW), Soma A-B (1.034 MW), Can (320 MW) and Seyitomer (600 MW).

"And then we will privatize nine portfolio groups," Aksu said.

First thermal plant to be privatized is the Hamitabat. Aksu said the privatization administration plans to open a tender in the coming days for Hamitabat.

"We will privatize Hamitabat by selling shares," he said.

Privatization of hydraulic plants will be made by transfer of operational rights and in thermal power plants by transfer of property rights.

Aksu said his authority was mulling public offering in some of the plants.
