Turkey's Aegean Izmir province is getting prepared to run as a candidate to host EXPO 2020.
Speaking after a decision taken by Izmir's municipal assembly in support of the Aegean city's becoming a candidate to host the event, Izmir Mayor Aziz Kocaoglu said all institutions in Izmir had displayed extensive efforts in order to make the city the venue of EXPO 2015, adding they had gained remarkable experiences in such process.
"I believe running as a candidate to host EXPO 2020 will contribute both to our city and to Turkey if the government continues to extend support on such issue," Kocaoglu said.
Moreover, Justice and Development (AK) Party's group spokesman Yusuf Kenan Cakar said that government's support was essential in major events such as EXPO.
Cakar said Izmir had the necessary experience, background and the vote potential to achieve such goal.
"Last time, thanks to our successful efforts, we managed to get votes even from countries where there is no Turkish embassy. I believe we can succeed if we work all together again. Let us leave aside political concerns. We can get a good result if all NGOs and political parties get together," Cakar said.
Two candidate cities, Turkey's Izmir and Italy's Milan, competed with each other in 2008 to become the venue of EXPO 2015.
Executives of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE) selected Milan as the host city of the event, which is cited as the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Izmir's theme for EXPO 2015 was "Health for All".
