Turkey's citrus producers who exported 1.2 million tons of citrus worth $800,000,000 in 2009, eye new markets.

Turkey, whose annual citrus production is around 3.5 million tons and the total fruit production is around 40 million tons, exports fruits to 93 countries including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Romania, Ukraine, Germany, and Serbia.

Head of the Mediterranean Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Union, Ali Kavak told AA that a 20% rise was expected in exports in 2010. A total of five million people are employed in the citrus sector.

Kavak said they were in search of new markets in order to further boost the citrus exports.

"We are targeting new markets like Japan, England and France. We will enter the Japanese market with grapefruit starting in January. Japan imports 180,000 tons of grapefruit annually. 80 percent of this comes from the U.S.. We are planning to export apricot and cherry to this country," said Kavak.
