Turkey's southeastern region hopeful to reach $ 6 bln-exports

Businesspeople in Turkey's southeastern region are hopeful to reach as high as six billion USD of exports for 2010, which would mark an annual increase thrice the country average, head of a regional union of exporters told the Anadolu Agency on Monday.

"Southeastern businessmen achieved a 30.3 percent year-on-year increase in exports in January-November with a total of $4,553 million despite fallout from the global recession. And our target now is to reach $6 billion this year and $7.5 billion in 2011," said Abdulkadir Cikmaz, head of the Union of Southeastern Anatolian Exporters.

Cikmaz said trade with neighboring countries played a major part in the region's business portfolio which he said included a total of 172 countries.

Free trade zone in Gaziantep has seen a trade volume of 113.8 million USD in the first 11 months of 2010, marking a 18 percent of year-on-year increase, said Mehmet Aslan, chairperson of the Gaziantep Chamber of Commerce.

Aslan warned against a public spending spree in the run up to next year's general elections, saying that the government should maintain strict financial discipline and related economic policies.

"Especially, measures should be taken to secure a revival in domestic demand," Aslan said.
