Turkish Airlines cancels Morocco flights over ash cloud

Turkey's national airline company cancelled on Tuesday flights to a Moroccan city due to a volcanic ash cloud.

The Turkish Airlines (THY) decided to cancel flights from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport to Casablanca and from Casablanca to Istanbul due to the ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Earlier on Tuesday, Turkish State Airports Administration (DHMI) said it would close Turkey's air space up to 20,000 feet over the Canakkale Strait and Thrace for four hours as of 3 p.m. as the ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland would affect Turkish air space.

The ash cloud has started to affect the Athens-Sofia-Istanbul FIR (flight international region) today.

Also, the Canakkale Airport will be closed to traffic. However, flights from Ataturk Airport have not been cancelled.

European countries closed their air space on April 14 due to a giant ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland, leading to flight cancellations in the majority of the continent. The air traffic turned back to normal on April 22.
