Turkey's national air carrier Turkish Airlines (THY), which has carried out its operations in Syria through local agencies since 1984, has opened an official office in Damascus.
Speaking at a reception held on the occasion of the opening on Thursday, Turkish ambassador in Damascus Omer Orhon said THY was one of the fastest growing airline companies in the world.
Orhon said positive relations between Turkey and Syria had contributed to THY's operations in this country as well, adding that mutual visits between the two countries particularly increased thanks to the lifting of visas.
Delivering a speech, THY's deputy chairman Altan Buyukyilmaz also noted that THY's expansion in Syria would continue.
Based in Istanbul, THY is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. The airlines is a Star Alliance member, and it carries approximately 25 million passengers a year.
The company posted 389 million Euro of profit in 2009, becoming one of the top companies, following Air China and Ryan Air, in the world that recorded the highest profit in 2009.
