Turkish Airlines signs deal with US firm for airliner equipment

Turkey's national airline company, the Turkish Airlines (THY), has signed an agreement with U.S. navigation and communication electronics provider Rockwell Collins.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by THY Director Temel Kotil and Rockwell Collins Vice Chariman Bruno Rambaud on the sidelines of an international aviation fair in Berlin.

Speaking to reporters, Kotil said THY needed navigation and communication equipment for its thirty Airbus A320s and 35 Boeing-737s it had purchased earlier this year.

"The planes are manufactured by Airbus and Boeing but we need this equipment," Kotil said, adding that the agreement covers a ten-year period.

Kotil was in Berlin to participate in a general assembly meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Kotil said the THY increased the number of its passengers by 25 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2010 as the occupancy rate 2.5 points, adding that it was among the European airlines with over ten percent profit margin.
