Turkish Cyprus hopes 1.1 mln tourists in 5 years

The prime minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Tuesday that tourism investments in TRNC would make a significant contribution to both the country's economy and its promotion in the international arena.

Delivering a speech at a meeting held in Istanbul on the occasion of Turkey's declaring 2011 as "TRNC Year", Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk said his country desired to receive annually 1.1 million tourists in the next 5 years and 2 million visitors by the year 2023.

Kucuk said that Turkey, Egypt and TRNC had become the rising stars in tourism sector after the recent economic crisis in Europe.

"In a very short period of time, we have increased the number of passengers arriving in our country by 13 percent and the number of tourists staying in our country by 7 percent," Kucuk said.

"In order for us to reach our target of 1 million tourists a year, the 'TRNC Year in Turkey' is of great importance. Tourism investments in TRNC will make a significant contribution to both our country's economy and its promotion in the international arena," the prime minister noted.

Speaking at the gathering, Turkish Culture & Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay said that Turkey had worked hard to become one of the top 10 countries in the world in terms of number of visitors and tourism income.

Noting that global tourism was in decline in 2009 due to the overall downturn in the world, Gunay said, "Turkey is the only country that has taken positive steps in this period".

Gunay said that Turkey was ready to share its experience in tourism sector with TRNC.

"Investments from our country have an important role in helping TRNC stand on its own feet. There is a great investment potential in TRNC and Turkish investors can make remarkable contributions to the island," he said.
