Turkish Finance Minister expects double-digit growth in Q1

Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said Sunday that Turkish economy could see a double-digit growth in the first quarter of 2010.

Pointing out that U.S. economy and European economy were in a recovery track and had positive signals over the past one month, Simsek said, "we can see a double-digit growth in the first quarter."

Figures for 2009 growth will be announced on Wednesday.

Last week, Simsek said that Turkey could have grown around 4 or 5 percent in the last quarter of 2009. He said government forecast a 6 percent contraction for 2009.

Turkish Deputy Premier Ali Babacan had put growth projection for Turkey in 2010 between 3.7 percent and 5.5 percent, higher than an earlier expectation of 3.5 percent. Babacan said government would revise official growth projections within a few months.

In a recent expectations survey, Turkish Central Bank's expectation for the year-end growth in GDP for the next year remained the same at 4.4 percent.
