Turkish govt discusses draft text on employment strategy

More than 600,000 new job opportunities should be created every year in order to stabilize the current unemployment rate in Turkey, according to a draft text on the country's national employment strategy.

The Economic Coordination Board convened under the chairmanship of Turkish State Minister & Deputy Premier Ali Babacan on Tuesday and discussed the draft text on Turkey's national employment strategy.

According to the text, quite a number of new jobs are needed so as to stabilize the present unemployment figures and this necessitates a higher growth rate or an improvement in the employment flexibility of growth.

The text also envisages to increase the participation of women, youngsters and physically-impaired people in Turkey's labor force.

Accordingly, women's participation in labor force, which is currently around 27.8 percent, would be increased to 35 percent by the year 2023. This figure is 64.3 percent in the European Union.

Besides, the unemployment rate of youngsters, which amounts to nearly 25 percent, would be drawn closer to overall unemployment figures.

Moreover, the draft says that the quota requirement for handicapped workers in public and private sectors would be fully met in two years time. Participation of the handicapped in labor force is 22 percent at the moment.
