Turkish govt gives body power to import meat over high prices

Turkish Council of Ministers' decree on livestock and meat imports was issued in the Official Gazette on Friday.

According to the decree, there will be 10 percent customs tax on livestock imports and 25 percent of customs duty on beef meat imports. 16,000 tons of livestock and 7,500 tons of beef meat would be imported and it will be valid till December 31, 2010.

Turkey lifted restrictions on the import of livestock, meat and fish to help curb price increases, Foreign Trade Minister Zafer Caglayan said.

Economy Minister Ali Babacan said meat prices in Turkey were well above those in Europe, adding that meat imports would continue until prices in the country dropped to "reasonable levels."
