Turkish Minister hopes free trade talks with Ukraine

Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan expressed hope that talks on free trade agreement with Ukraine would begin during Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to that country.

Holding a press conference after the 7th term meeting of Turkish-Ukrainian Commercial and Economic Cooperation Commission in Istanbul, Caglayan said that foreign trade volume between Turkey and Ukraine was nearly 8.5 billion USD in 2008, but this figure dropped to 4.2 billion USD in 2009 due to global economic crisis. However, a rising trend began in the first quarter of 2010, he added.

Caglayan said that Turkish companies undertook 2.8 billion USD of construction projects in Ukraine so far.

He added that both Turkey and Ukraine were energy transit countries, and they could cooperate in this area too.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Deputy Premier Serhiy Tihipko said that Turkey was the second trade partner of Ukraine after Russia.

Noting that both Turkey and Ukraine had a good transit potential, Tihipko said that it was necessary to use this potential better and deepen the cooperation between the two countries.

He said that Ukraine obtained 50 percent of its electricity energy from nuclear power plants, adding that they could cooperate with Turkey in this issue too.

Tihipko said that they should initiate formal talks for a free trade agreement between the two countries.
