The Turkish energy minister has said that a discount of TL 0.02 per liter on gasoline prices by the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corporation (TÜPRAŞ) on Wednesday is in line with their expectation of a decrease in fuel prices.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız received Croatian Economy Minister Duro Popijac on Wednesday. At a press conference after the meeting, Yıldız said the TL 0.07 price increase per liter on gasoline last month was mainly caused by price rises in international markets, refineries that have increased prices and price increases by fuel distributors.

“After the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on the latest developments in fuel prices with sector representatives, we have voiced our expectations of a price decrease. TÜPRAŞ agreed to decrease the gasoline refinery price by 2 percent. This leads to a discount of TL 0.02 per liter, and in this way the total gasoline price increase since the previous month has dropped to TL 0.05,” Yıldız said.

The energy minister also noted that there was only one fuel distributor selling gasoline for more than TL 4 per liter in Turkey, which was in İstanbul. He added that pre-discount prices were around TL 3.82 per liter.

Yıldız noted he expects fuel prices will continue falling in the near future and therefore expects refineries and fuel distributors to change their prices in line with market developments.

Answering a question as to whether there will be a price increase in electricity and natural gas next year, Yıldız replied that several indicators show there will be no price increase in 2011.
